For Aegis, Zodiak, Aether, and Talon, operatives in the United Nations Task Force Gaea, life should have returned to normal after they restored the cosmic balance that a reckless elder goddess shattered, but because of the intervention of the Fates, they would never remember what life was like before. With history now unfolding the way it was supposed to, paranoia plagues this new time line, and tight-fisted governments mandate control through a pervasive military presence, DNA scans, and surveillance cameras.

Inexplicable occurrences all over the world give way to a new mission for Task Force Gaea when an ancient cloudlike evil referred to in prophecy only as The Nebulous One emerges from Tartaros, with the intention of devouring the Olympeian gods. But, before she can find them, all of the gods but Apollo have disappeared.

Leaving chaos and human corpses in her wake, she oozes her way across the globe to satisfy her hunger. Apollo will not face this threat alone, and it then becomes a race will he and Task Force Gaea find and vanquish this primordial goddess without falling prey to her power before she finds the gods?

Aegis and his teammates, perhaps as a side effect of their encounters with The Nebulous One, have to battle personal demons in the form of potent memories that could jeopardize their mission’s success, seemingly insurmountable obstacles that could indeed mean the end of their team.

Starting in antiquity and moving to the modern day, this epic battle between good and evil leaves both immortal and mortal alike wondering whether memory can be a blessing… or a curse.

It takes a lot to work with an established group of characters (Greek Gods) and, while staying true to their history and essence, make them your own and write a story so compelling that you (read I) stay up all night to read the second half of the book because I cannot begin to see how it may end. Such is this book.

I stated in my review of book 1 that I am a purist where the Greek Gods are concerned. I write and use them in my own stories. However, after book 1 I was more than ready for this book. There are changes (part of the plot, not really changes at all) that occur and there are weavings of plot threads and story lines, character development and foreshadowing that are so subtle and well incorporated that I was impressed. It takes a lot to impress me.

The four main characters (and the peripheral ones) are very well developed. The themes of using your strengths and following your destiny are present, but not belabored. The language is rich and the words used are not your basic vocabulary. But, instead of sounding pretentious, it is much the opposite. This author, an English teacher of much talent, finds THE perfect word, something I struggle with in my own writing. In fact, most writing manuals for fiction writers tell you to find that one word that is perfect. They tell you not to use the word "very", to search for and agonize over using just the perfect turn of the phrase, the only word that really conveys what you wish to for the reader. This author does that masterfully.

The language is not simple, but then it shouldn't be. It is rich and flowing, it is precise, it's how I wish I could write. There is something to be said for using one perfect sentence rather than five to get you meaning across.

The action is face paced and exciting, but not to the detriment of the characters and their struggles. They are well rounded, with pertinent histories, and unique flaws and talents. They are fully created beings. The horror (and, yes, there is some ... I mean, there is quite the unique villain), the action, the world building, and the dialogue are all well written and draw you fully into the book.

It has been many years that I've stayed up all night to finish a whole book. The last few chapters? Yes. But a whole book? Not for over a decade. This is one of those books. I got half-way done and I had to finish. There was no rest until I reached the very end.

My only complaint? Book three is not out yet!!!

Task Force Gaea Memory Curse edition by David Berger Michael Hamlett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When it comes to the Gods everything is always simple... they win. This story so turned that upside down the Gods go into hiding when The Nebulous One has found it's way out of Hades. The story is so full of story I absorbed myself into in. I never read the first yet not once was I lost reading this. Great read high recommend it.
This was even better than the first one. It had the feel of comic book style world building. From origin stories, to alternate timelines. And for flavor, we had a Lovecraftian elder god. Lots of great action and heroics. Totally recommend this series. This is basically Percy Jackson's older brother who read way more Greek mythology. I mean that with the utmost respect.
At first I was sceptical about a book with so many gods, offspring and superheroes. I enjoyed it, however. The writing was fast paced and well researched, and I kept waiting to see what would happen next. I hope there are going to be more books in the future.
If you are a fan of Greek mythology, fantasy stories, and writing that makes you think, you will enjoy Task Force Gaea - Memory's Curse.

In this second of three books in the Task Force Gaea universe, David Berger continues to develop the beautiful world and characters from Task ForceGaea - Finding Balance. The world of Immortals and Mortals is now facing a great threat, building upon the ideas that played out in the first book. We see continuing character development, without feeling like any of the characters have become stale. Each chapter brings you further into the story, while continuing to make real world parallels in regards to protecting the Earth and having an open mind.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first, as it continues on all the greatness the first book contained, while feeling fresh and new in its own right.
Task Force Gaea {Memory's Curse} is the sensational, spectacular sequel to `Finding Balance'. Full of inspired ideas and remarkable creative vision this book is a breath of fresh air within a highly competitive genre, wherein the unexpected leaves you stunned. Having not read book 1 within this series and having never encountered this author before, I was sceptical and tentative upon approaching this rather supremely singular novel. Memory's curse was packed with astonishing fantastical concepts and unique characters, which leapt off the page with such vibrancy and unbelievable realism that took me by surprise. At times the storyline was so dense and cleverly complex that I did loose my way, and so I would next time read book 1 first before plunging headlong into this exquisitely detailed creation.

Gaea is a world of mortals and Gods. It is a place in which the zodiac signs present weighty meaning, and where a task force protects the Earth from the horrors of the Underworld. The delicate balance between animal, mortal man and divine God is constantly threatened by those evil beings that seek supremacy over all. Aegis, Zodiak, Aether and Talon are the operatives who try to maintain harmonius equilibrium and cosmic balance that is threatened by the Fates and Goddesses of the Underworld.
A sci-fi fest of epic battles and immortal blood that is exciting and totally thrilling!

Fast-paced and action-packed this sweeping masterwork took me on the most unforgettable journey into a world of wonder and deadly danger. The extensive background history of the world which the author has created, including characters such as the task force, the Gods and those other creatures from the underworld is wonderfully realised in such depth. This compelling, entirely credible story had me hooked from page one and despite being at a disadvantage of not reading book 1, I thoroughly enjoyed this magnetic tale which oozed such premise and innovative concepts. Including additional information on the Cosmos and a key to words, this brilliant book is one that I am so pleased to have had the chance to read.

4.5 stars
